This super healthy, Dhal Curry is a delicious vegan curry that will satisfy any curry lover. You can either have it hot from the pan or let it cool. It’s equally mouthwatering.
This is one of my favorite Indian dishes. Honestly, I can have it any time of day, even for breakfast. Yes, it’s sooo good.
Dhal also spelled as daal, dal, dah is a term used in the Indian subcontinent for dried, split pulses (legumes).
In this recipe, I use red lentils which make a perfect Dhal. It’s full of vitamins, super easy to make, burns fat (in moderate portions ok?) and super delicious! What more do you want? I am sold.
You can make it as much as spicy you wish. I personally prefer it extra spicy.
How to Prepare the Lentil Dal
Should you keep the lentils in the water for a few hours before making this dish? I personally don’t bother with that. Just wash it a little bit and add as it is.
How to make Dhal Curry – Step by Step
Cut all the vegetables into small cubes. Preheat the pan at a low temperature then add the coconut oil and add the spices. Mix for 1 minute and add the vegetables. Let them simmer on low heat. (photos 1-2).
Meanwhile, wash the organic red lentils and dry them well. Add the water, the coconut cream, the tomato paste, and the lentils to the pan. Let it cook in low heat for 30 minutes. If needed add more water. Serve it as a soup or with basmati rice. (photo 3-4-5).
How to Prep this in Advance
This lentil dal is so easy to make in advance just cook the rice and cut the veggies in advance.
Cook’s Tips For Perfect Lentil Dal:
- Instead of lentils, you can use peas or beans. They make equally a delicious dish.
- You can add the spices you want. If you do not like curry you can skip it.
- Do not replace the coconut cream with coconut water. The cream gives a thickness to the dish.
- The tomato paste just gives color and a nice consistency to the recipe so do not omit it.
- You can make it as thick as you wish. If you prefer it soupier just add a little bit of water.
- Before serving you can add a little bit of vinegar.
- I served it with basmati rice. You can use any rice you want.
