Is sugar bad for your health?
How to Reduce Sugar Cravings and Overcome withdrawals.
1. Clean out your pantry
Check the products in your cupboards and in the refrigerator for any sugar. (Bread, yogurts, packaged juices, etc). Whatever contains sugar, if you do not want to throw it away, put it somewhere apart that it's not visible to you. If you are Vegan you can find a quick guide on how to be organized here --> How to organize your pantry and shopping list.
2. Stay motivated
Make a list of the things that made you decide to quit the sugar. Track your progress and struggles daily. Additionally, take a before and after picture (before and after the challenge), in case you wanna lose weight.
3. Increase Your Protein
Protein reduces cravings and fights hunger.
Protein is great for reducing hunger, sugar cravings and maintains normal blood sugar. Good sources of protein include black beans, spinach, chickpeas. You can find some sources here ---> Basic Sources of Protein.
4. Increase Your Fiber
Fiber moves through the body undigested, helping keep you feeling full and satisfied to kick sugar cravings to the curb. A few sources of fiber are Avocados, Coconut, Figs, Black Beans, Lentils, Nuts, Flaxseeds, and Quinoa.
5. Drinks a lot of water
Many times hunger is confused with thirst so next time you are hunger ask yourself twice. Next time you feel cravings and hungry, drink 2 glasses of water. If you do not like the water you can flavor it with lemon, cucumber, mint, or any fruit you like. Just cut small pieces and put them in a glass of water. Leave it for a few hours and it's ready!
6. Eat Some Probiotics
Probiotic foods increase the beneficial bacteria in your gut. A few examples of Probiotic foods are Tempeh, Olives in brine, apple cider vinegar, and miso.
7. Eat Healthy Fats
They can satiety your sugar cravings and this is because fat is digested very slowly, so it keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Include in your diet avocados, nuts, seeds, and coconut oil.
8. Eat healthy sugars
Any kind of fruit is your best friend during detox. Eat as many as you wish and do not count calories. They will keep you hydrated and satisfied. Especially during winter, choose juicy fruits as oranges and mandarines. Fruits and more fruits will definitely help you!
Additionally, stevia is a green leaf natural sweetener and you can have a maximum of 1 teaspoon daily.
There are other sweeteners you can use but I would not recommend them during detox. For more sugar substitutes you can check here ---> Sugar and Sweeteners.
9. Don't starve yourself
Try to prevent yourself from becoming hungry between meals. Avoid getting extremely hungry. It will not help with detoxification.
10. Drink Herbal Teas
Aren't you fun with tea? Think twice! Find an aromatic one that is tasty and satisfies your taste. Teas are great to fight sugar cravings and avoid you run to the fridge. Choose the ones without caffeine. My favorite ones are mint, lemon, orange, Luiza, and licorice. Mentioning Licorice, it's a great alternative to sugar! You boil just a little for about 7-8 minutes and surprisingly you have a sweet drink.
11. Sweat it out!
Make a list of the type of exercise you love and start! Not tomorrow, but today! 🙂 Your body will thank you for that. Personally, I prefer yoga, swimming, running, and Jumba. Additionally, a sauna and steam room are great for detoxification!
Sauna and Steam Benefits
- Relieve stress
- Relax muscles and pains
- Flush toxins
- Cleanses the skin
- Increases circulation
- Improves sleeping
- Burns calories
- Makes you feel great
12. Sleep
During detox, you feel tired, sluggish, sleepy, and with less energy. It is important to allow your body to get the extra rest that it needs. It's advisable to rest and sleep as much as possible. It will help you with the detox symptoms.
13. Book a Massage
The benefits of Massage are endless!! I love massages! During my working years in Qatar, I used to have a lot of massages at a very cheap price. I am a big fan and I used to see big improvements in my health. To the point that I studied Holistic and Thai massage for around 6 months. Massa should not be considered as a luxury but a necessity.
During detoxification, the best massage is Lymphatic Drainage.
Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage:
- Improves immune system
- Reduce stress
- Encourage relaxation
- Remove toxins from your body
- Improve sleep
- Beneficial for athletes
14. Take an Epsom Bath
Epsom Baths are great for removing the toxins! Apart from that, they are relaxing and beneficial to constipation. They contain magnesium which is a vital mineral that a lot of people lack.
15. Be patient
It could be a few days or even weeks but eventually, you will feel better. You will feel lighter, healthier, without sugar cravings, and without any symptoms. Suddenly, you will feel better than ever.
